19 Cozy September Dinner Ideas I Can’t Wait to Make

There’s something about September that makes me start craving completely different food.

By the end of August, I’m already dreaming about creamy soups, slow cooker dinners, baked pasta, cozy casseroles, and the kinds of meals that actually sound good once the nights start getting cooler.

So I pulled together the recipes I genuinely can’t wait to make this September.

This isn’t meant to be an exhaustive list of every fall recipe on my site. These are the ones I’m actually thinking about right now — the soups, casseroles, chicken dinners, and comfort foods that start sounding really good the second fall is around the corner.

If you’re looking for easy September dinner ideas, cozy fall meals, family-friendly weeknight recipes, or just a little inspiration for what to cook this month, start here.

Orzo soup is one of those meals that feels cozy without being too heavy. It’s warm, comforting, and exactly the kind of soup I start wanting once the weather begins to cool down.

This is a great September dinner when you’re ready for soup season but not quite ready for the heaviest winter meals yet.

slow cooker Marry Me chicken soup with gnocchi in a white bowl

Marry Me Chicken Gnocchi Soup

Chicken gnocchi soup is creamy, cozy, and filling enough to be dinner on its own.

Tender chicken, soft gnocchi, vegetables, and a creamy broth make this one of those soups I could eat again and again once fall starts

slow cooker french onion soup in a white crock topped with bread and melted cheese and crushed red pepper flakes

Slow Cooker French Onion Soup

French onion soup is pure comfort food.

Slow-cooked onions, savory broth, crusty bread, and melted cheese make this one of those recipes that feels like an occasion even though it’s made from really simple ingredients.

creamy butternut squash and tortellini soup in a white bowl with fall red leaves in the background

Creamy Butternut Squash and Chicken Sausage Tortellini Soup (Slow Cooker or Stovetop)

Tortellini soup is one of my favorite ways to turn a simple pot of soup into a full dinner.

The tortellini makes it hearty, and it’s an easy option for busy fall nights when you want something warm without making a complicated meal.

Sheet Pan Roasted Butternut Squash Soup Recipe

Nothing says early fall quite like butternut squash soup.

It’s smooth, cozy, and naturally a little sweet, and it’s especially good with crusty bread or a grilled cheese on the side.

creamy chicken noodle soup in a white bowl with a spoon

Creamy Chicken Noodle Soup

This creamy chicken noodle soup is everything I want once the weather cools down.

It’s made with chicken, egg noodles, vegetables, potatoes, bone broth, cream, and Parmesan, so it feels extra hearty while still being easy enough for a weeknight.

Copycat Panera Bread Broccoli Cheddar Cheese Soup

Broccoli cheddar soup is one of those recipes that just hits the spot once fall starts.

It’s creamy, cheesy, packed with broccoli, and perfect with a piece of bread for dipping.

Ritz chicken is one of those dinners I keep coming back to because it’s easy, comforting, and my family actually gets excited about it.

The creamy chicken with that buttery cracker topping makes it feel like classic comfort food without requiring a lot of work.

chicken leg quarters roasted with sweet potatoes and carrots on a plate

Oven Baked Chicken Leg Quarters with Sweet Potatoes and Carrots

This is one of my favorite inexpensive fall dinners.

Chicken leg quarters are usually one of the cheapest cuts of chicken, and roasting them with sweet potatoes and carrots turns them into a full sheet pan dinner that can sometimes cost less than $5 depending on what’s on sale.

easy white chicken chili from the crock pot in a bowl with a black rim, topped with fresh cilantro, 3 jalapeno slices, and shredded cheddar cheese

Crock Pot White Chicken Chili

This creamy white chicken chili is a true dump-and-go dinner.

Chicken, beans, corn, green chiles, spices, and broth all go into the slow cooker, then cream cheese and cream get stirred in at the end.

It takes almost no effort but has so much flavor.

5 ingredient slow cooker mac and cheese in slow cooker with a spoon

5 Ingredient Slow Cooker Mac and Cheese Recipe

This 5-ingredient Crock Pot mac and cheese is exactly the kind of recipe I want once September gets busy.

It’s creamy, cheesy, really easy, and the slow cooker does most of the work. With only five ingredients, it’s also one of those recipes that feels doable even on a night when I really don’t want to make dinner.

It works as a simple meatless dinner with a vegetable on the side, or as an easy side dish with chicken, meatloaf, or another fall favorite.

spoonful of crock pot chicken spaghetti

Crock Pot Chicken Spaghetti

Creamy chicken spaghetti is pure comfort food.

Making it in the Crock Pot makes it even easier, and it’s exactly the kind of family dinner I start craving once the weather turns cooler.

crock pot chicken curry in a bowl topped with cilantro, and on top of rice

4-Ingredient Slow Cooker Chicken Curry

This slow cooker chicken curry is one of those recipes that feels almost too easy for how good it tastes.

It uses just a handful of ingredients and cooks into a creamy, flavorful dinner that’s perfect over rice.

easy lasagna with ricotta cheese cooked in a baking dish on a table

The Best Easy Lasagna Recipe with Ricotta (Perfect for Meal Prep + Holidays!)

There are some recipes you don’t need to reinvent, and Mom’s lasagna is one of them.

It’s warm, cheesy, filling, and exactly the kind of dinner that makes the whole house smell amazing.

September is when lasagna officially starts sounding good to me again.

ground beef stroganoff in a pan

Easy and Delicious Ground Beef Stroganoff: A Pantry Meal Savior

Ground beef stroganoff is classic comfort food.

Creamy sauce, savory beef, and noodles make this one of those dinners that feels cozy without being complicated.

Sweet potato shepherd's pie in a circle baking pan with fall themed baking mits next to it

Sweet Potato Shepherd's Pie

Sweet potato shepherd’s pie gives you all the comfort of the classic version with a slightly sweeter fall twist.

The combination of savory filling and creamy sweet potatoes makes this one of those dinners that feels especially right in September and October.

The Best Turkey Shepherd’s Pie

Turkey shepherd’s pie is such a good way to make a hearty fall dinner.

The savory turkey filling topped with mashed potatoes makes it warm, filling, and perfect once the evenings start getting cooler.

ravioli bake in a bowl with a fork

This Ravioli Bake is a MUST TRY to Make Weeknights Easy!

Ravioli bake is one of those dinners that gives you all the comfort of baked pasta without nearly as much work.

It’s cheesy, saucy, filling, and really easy to throw together, which makes it perfect for a busy September night when you want something cozy but don’t want a complicated recipe.

It’s also a great one to keep in your back pocket because it feels a little special while still being incredibly simple.

What Should I Make for Dinner in September?

If you’re not sure where to start, I’d choose based on what kind of night you’re having.

Need something almost effortless?
Make the creamy white chicken chili, slow cooker chicken curry, Crock Pot chicken spaghetti, or 5-ingredient Crock Pot mac and cheese.

Want soup?
Try marry me chicken gnocchi soup, creamy chicken noodle soup, tortellini soup, French onion soup, butternut squash soup, or Panera-style broccoli cheddar soup.

Want classic comfort food?
Go with Mom’s lasagna, ravioli bake, 5-ingredient Crock Pot mac and cheese, ground beef stroganoff, or sweet potato shepherd’s pie.

Trying to keep dinner inexpensive?
Chicken leg quarters are one of my favorite budget dinners, especially when sweet potatoes and carrots are inexpensive.

You definitely don’t need to make everything on this list. Pick one or two that sound really good right now and save the rest for later in the month.

Easy September Meal Planning

September is one of those months where dinner can suddenly feel harder.

School starts again, sports get busy, afternoons fill up, and somehow everyone still expects to eat dinner every night.

So when I’m planning meals for September, I try to mix a few different kinds of dinners:

  • one or two slow cooker meals
  • one soup night
  • one easy pasta or casserole
  • one really inexpensive dinner
  • one recipe everyone already loves

That gives us enough variety without requiring me to come up with seven completely different complicated meals every week.
