Description
Warm up this fall with a delightful twist on traditional chili! Our Sweet Potato Turkey Chili is hearty, flavorful, and perfect for chilly evenings. Plus, we’ve got a secret ingredient that will make this dish unforgettable.
Ingredients
- 1 diced onion
- 1 large sweet potato (or 2 medium to small sweet potatoes)
- 3 cloves of garlic, minced
- 2 tablespoons of oil
- 1 pound of ground turkey (or ground beef for a beefy variation, or skip meat for a vegetarian option)
- 2 tablespoons of chili powder
- 1 teaspoon of ground cumin
- 1 teaspoon of paprika (smoked paprika for extra flavor)
- 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper (optional, adjust to your spice preference)
- 1 cup of chicken broth (or 1 cup water + 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon)
- 1 can of fire-roasted diced tomatoes (or regular diced tomatoes)
- 1 can of drained kidney beans (or your choice of beans)
- A dash of cinnamon(My secret ingredient!)
Instructions
-
In a Dutch oven or large pot, heat 2 tablespoons of oil over medium heat.
-
Add the diced onion and sweet potato to the pot. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the onion is translucent and the sweet potatoes begin to soften.
-
Add the minced garlic and cook for another minute, stirring frequently.
-
Add the ground turkey (or meat of your choice) to the pot. Cook until the meat is no longer pink, breaking it apart as it cooks.
-
Sprinkle in 2 tablespoons of chili powder, 1 teaspoon of ground cumin, 1 teaspoon of paprika (smoked paprika for extra flavor), and 1/2 teaspoon of cayenne pepper if desired. Stir to coat everything evenly with the spices.
-
Pour in 1 cup of chicken broth (or water with 1 teaspoon chicken bouillon), followed by 1 can of fire-roasted diced tomatoes and 1 can of drained kidney beans.
-
Don’t forget the secret ingredient! Add a dash of cinnamon to the pot. Stir everything thoroughly.
-
Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low. Cover the pot and simmer for 15 to 25 minutes, depending on the size of your sweet potato pieces. Check for doneness – the sweet potatoes should be tender.
-
Once the sweet potatoes are cooked to perfection, your chili is ready to serve.
