Healthy Shrimp Tacos with Slaw and Greek Yogurt Sauce (on Sourdough Tortillas)

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe·Leave a Review
healthy shrimp tacos on homemade sourdough tortillas topped with slaw, wild caught shrimp, and sauce.

I’ve been seeing shrimp tacos everywhere on Instagram lately, and I couldn’t resist putting my own clean, fresh spin on them. Of course, I had to use wild-caught shrimp (not farmed!), and my homemade sourdough tortillas that we always have stocked in the fridge. These healthy shrimp tacos are packed with flavor, colorful slaw, and a creamy Greek yogurt shrimp taco sauce that pulls everything together—no mayo, seed oils, or processed ingredients here.

Why You’ll Love This Shrimp Taco Recipe

  • Made with wild-caught shrimp for better taste and nutrition
  • Spicy shrimp tacos with just the right balance of heat and creaminess
  • A creamy, tangy shrimp taco sauce made with Greek yogurt, not mayo
  • Crunchy slaw with organic cabbage and tangy pickled red onions
  • Homemade sourdough tortillas for that extra special touch
  • Perfect for a clean eating taco night or summer dinner
  • Fresh lime juice adds a bright, citrusy finish

Ingredients

For the Slaw

  • 2 cups shredded organic purple cabbage
  • ½ cup shredded carrots (conventional is fine)
  • ⅓ cup pickled red onions
  • Juice of ½ a fresh lime
  • Toss everything together and set aside to marinate while you prep the rest.

For the Greek Yogurt Shrimp Taco Sauce

  • ½ cup plain Greek yogurt
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • Juice of ½ a fresh lime
  • Mix well and refrigerate until ready to use.

For the Spicy Shrimp

  • 1 lb wild-caught shrimp, peeled, deveined, and tails removed (thawed if frozen)
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • ½ teaspoon cumin
  • ½ teaspoon sea salt
  • ½ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 tablespoon ghee or olive oil

This simple blend doubles as the perfect shrimp taco seasoning—smoky, flavorful, and just a little spicy.

Instructions

  1. Prep the Slaw:
In a medium bowl, combine the cabbage, carrots, pickled red onions, and lime juice. Toss well and let sit to soak up the flavors.
  2. Make the Sauce:
Whisk together Greek yogurt, honey, smoked paprika, garlic powder, chili powder, and fresh lime juice in a small bowl. This creamy shrimp taco sauce is light, tangy, and full of flavor. Chill until ready to serve.
  3. Cook the Shrimp:
Pat the shrimp dry, then season with the chili powder, cumin, salt, and pepper—your homemade shrimp taco seasoning.
Heat ghee or olive oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add shrimp in a single layer. Cook about 3 minutes on the first side, then flip and cook another 2–3 minutes until browned and fully cooked.
  4. Assemble the Tacos:
Warm up your sourdough tortillas (or use any tortilla you love). Layer on the slaw, shrimp, and a generous drizzle of the Greek yogurt taco sauce. Top with chopped cilantro and crumbled queso fresco if desired. Squeeze on more fresh lime juice for an extra pop of brightness.

Tips & Variations

  • Make it dairy-free: Use a plant-based Greek-style yogurt and skip the queso fresco.
  • No pickled onions? Try raw red onion or a quick pickle with vinegar and salt.
  • Want more heat? Add a pinch of cayenne to the shrimp taco seasoning or stir a little hot sauce into the yogurt.

Frequently Asked Questions About Shrimp Tacos

Can I use frozen shrimp for shrimp tacos?

Yes! Frozen shrimp work great in this shrimp taco recipe. In fact, most “fresh” shrimp at the store have usually been frozen and thawed already. Just make sure to thaw your shrimp completely and pat them dry before seasoning and cooking. This helps them sear properly and not steam in the pan.

What’s the best shrimp taco seasoning?

For these spicy shrimp tacos, I use a simple blend: chili powder, cumin, sea salt, and black pepper. You can also add smoked paprika, cayenne, or garlic powder for extra depth. This combination gives a warm, smoky flavor without overpowering the shrimp. It’s easy to customize if you want more heat or a bit of sweetness.

If you’re looking for a pre-mixed shrimp taco seasoning, Siete brand is a good choice. In general, check the label and avoid blends with added sugar or seed oils. But honestly, homemade is quick and much cleaner!

Is Greek yogurt good on shrimp tacos?

Yes, Greek yogurt is a perfect substitute for mayo or sour cream in shrimp taco sauce. It’s creamy, tangy, and high in protein with no seed oils or additives. In this recipe, the Greek yogurt sauce includes honey, smoked paprika, lemon juice, and chili powder to create a flavorful topping that balances the spicy shrimp and crunchy slaw beautifully.

What toppings go on shrimp tacos?

There are so many delicious toppings for shrimp tacos! Here are a few of the best:

  • Shredded cabbage or slaw (adds crunch and color)
  • Pickled red onions (for tang and bite)
  • Greek yogurt sauce or crema
  • Chopped fresh cilantro
  • Crumbled queso fresco or cotija cheese
  • Fresh lime juice (essential!)
  • Diced avocado or guacamole
  • Sliced radishes for extra crunch

This shrimp taco recipe includes a slaw and a Greek yogurt sauce that pair perfectly with the wild-caught shrimp. But feel free to mix it up based on what’s in your fridge.

What kind of tortillas are best for shrimp tacos?

a stack of sourdough tortillas on a striped tea towel with a white container in the background

Homemade sourdough tortillas are my favorite—they have amazing flavor and are much easier to digest than conventional flour tortillas. You can also use:

  • Corn tortillas (gluten-free and traditional)
  • Cassava tortillas (grain-free option) – Siete Brand is good
  • Organic whole wheat tortillas
  • Lettuce wraps for a low-carb version

If you’re buying tortillas, look for ones made with just a few real ingredients—avoid anything with hydrogenated oils or preservatives.

How do I keep shrimp from overcooking?

Shrimp cook very quickly—usually in 5 to 6 minutes total. The key is to use medium-high heat, spread them in an even layer in the pan, and flip after about 3 minutes. Once they turn pink and slightly golden on both sides, they’re done.

Overcooked shrimp become rubbery, so stay nearby and don’t walk away while cooking them!

Can I make these shrimp tacos ahead of time?

Parts of this recipe are great for prepping ahead:

  • Slaw: Can be made up to 24 hours in advance. The flavors get even better as it sits.
  • Shrimp taco sauce: Make it 2–3 days ahead and store in the fridge.
  • Shrimp: I recommend cooking the shrimp fresh, but you can season and store them raw in the fridge up to a day ahead of time.

To reheat cooked shrimp, gently warm in a skillet with a bit of oil—just until heated through to avoid drying them out.

Are these shrimp tacos gluten-free?

They can be! The recipe is naturally gluten-free except for the sourdough tortillas. If you need to make it gluten-free, just swap in corn or cassava tortillas. All other ingredients (shrimp, slaw, sauce) are gluten-free as written.

How spicy are these shrimp tacos?

These tacos are mild to medium in spice, depending on your chili powder. If you want them spicy, add ¼ teaspoon of cayenne pepper or a splash of hot sauce to the sauce. To tone it down, you can cut the chili powder in half or use sweet paprika instead of smoked.

What sides go well with shrimp tacos?

Here are some tasty and clean sides to serve with your tacos:

  • Mexican-style street corn
  • Cilantro lime rice
  • Black beans or refried beans (look for BPA-free canned options or make your own)
  • Grilled veggies like zucchini, corn, or peppers
  • Fresh fruit salad with watermelon and lime
  • Chips and guacamole (check for clean chips made with avocado or coconut oil – Siete Brand is good for these too!)

Can I use a different protein in this taco recipe?

Yes! If you don’t have shrimp, this same taco setup works beautifully with:

  • Grilled chicken
  • Crispy white fish (like cod or haddock)
  • Sliced steak
  • Roasted chickpeas for a vegetarian option

Just season your protein with a similar spice blend and build your tacos with the same slaw and Greek yogurt sauce.

Clean Eating Shrimp Tacos You’ll Crave Weekly

This shrimp tacos recipe comes together in under 30 minutes and tastes like something you’d get at a beachside taco stand—but it’s made with clean, wholesome ingredients in your own kitchen. The crispy slaw, spicy shrimp, creamy sauce, and tangy lime juice are an irresistible combo.

Whether you’re looking for a go-to shrimp taco recipe or a healthier twist on taco night, this one is a keeper.
