My Mom’s Best Tomato Salad! You Will Never Have A Better One!

Jump to Recipe·Print Recipe·Leave a Review

This is, hands down, the best tomato salad that ever lived. The red wine vinaigrette dressing with the tomato juices make an out of this world flavor that can’t be replicated.

When I even think about this recipe, my mouth begins to water in anticipation. Each year, when the tomatoes begin to ripen in my area and I’m diligently checking the farm stand for a really red one it’s to make this tomato salad and nothing else. It’s so simple, you only need tomatoes and pantry ingredients to make the dressing yet, it is one of my favorite things in the whole entire world.

Exactly How Simple It Is

Here is the super simple breakdown of how to make this salad:

Tomato Salad:

1/4 cup olive oil

2 tbsp red wine vinegar

1 tsp garlic powder

2-3 tsp sugar

salt to taste

2-5 vine ripe farm fresh tomatoes sliced into wedges

Mix all together, refrigerate for a few minutes and enjoy! You can also dip bread in the leftover dressing and it’s divine.

It’s The Best Tomato Salad For a Reason

tomato salad, steak, and potatoes

I can see why you may question the importance of a simple tomato salad. Why this salad? And could it really be that good? But you see, this salad is a whole experience. When you place the salad on your plate with the other lunch of dinner items (I recommend this steak and this potato recipe), the dressing runs everywhere on the plate. And the dressing is no longer just the vinaigrette you initially made. The fresh tomato juices are a part of what makes this dressing so special. As you indulge in your meal, you get that tangy tomato salad flavor in every bite and for some reason, it’s just right.

And that’s not the best part. After that experience, grab a slice of Parisian bread, a slice of Pepperidge Farm Oatmeal Bread, or a leftover hotdog or hamburger roll and dip it in the leftover dressing in the bowl. This is a tangy deliciousness, you’ll never forget!

We’ve made this recipe 100’s of times and it never dissapoints. Don’t forget to try dipping some bread in the dressing at the end of the meal! You won’t regret it!

Ingredients

Units Scale
  • 3–5 vine ripe tomatoes (sliced into wedges)

Dressing

  • 1/4 cup olive oil
  • 2 tbsp red wine vinegar
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 2–3 tsp sugar
  • salt (to taste)
Instacart Get Recipe Ingredients

Instructions

  1. Mix together the dressing ingredients and add in tomatoes. Toss to coat.
  2. Place the salad in the fridge for 5-10 minutes.
  3. Remove the salad when ready to enjoy! You can also dip bread in the leftover salad dressing after eating the salad (this is the best part, if you ask me)

Notes

Taste the dressing and if it feels too vinegary add more sugar.

I recommend dipping either sliced Parisian bread, Oatmeal bread, or leftover hot dog or hamburger rolls.
