Description

Perfect for a make-ahead breakfast with fresh berries and a custardy base, this easy casserole is ideal for holidays or special occasions.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 whole baguette (or brioche or leftover bread)
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup brown sugar
  • 8 large eggs
  • 1 cup blueberries (or 1/2 cup as called for)
  • 1/2 cup strawberries, sliced (or frozen berries)
  • Powdered sugar for garnish

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Dish:
Spray a 9×6-inch casserole pan with non-stick spray. Slice the baguette (or brioche) into chunks and arrange them in the pan.

  2. Make the Custard:
In a large bowl, whisk together the milk, cinnamon, vanilla, brown sugar, and eggs until fully combined.

  3. Assemble the Casserole:
Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread, ensuring all the bread pieces are well-coated. Sprinkle the blueberries and sliced strawberries over the top.

  4. Chill Overnight:
Cover the casserole with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight (or for at least 4 hours).

  5. Bake:
Preheat the oven to 350°F the next morning. Remove the plastic wrap and bake for 35-40 minutes, or until the casserole is golden and set in the middle.

  6. Serve:
Let the casserole cool slightly before dusting with powdered sugar and serving warm.
