Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 medium carrots, peeled and chopped
  • 1 pound (about 3 cups) potatoes, peeled and cubed
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 meaty ham bones or 2 pounds of smoked ham hocks (or 1/2 pound cubed ham)
  • 16 ounces dried green split peas
  • 6 cups chicken broth (or water with salt)
  • 1 tablespoon dried celery flakes (or a little celery salt)
  • 1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme
  • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil
  • Lemon pepper seasoning (optional)
  • 1/8 teaspoon dried marjoram
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

1. In a slow cooker, add the chopped potatoes, carrots, and onion. 2. If using ham bones or ham hocks, place them in the slow cooker. If using cubed ham, add it to the slow cooker. 3. Add the dried green split peas and chicken broth (or your preferred liquid). 4. Season with dried celery flakes (or celery salt), garlic powder, dried thyme, dried basil, and marjoram. If you have lemon pepper seasoning, you can add it as well. 5. Place the bay leaf into the mixture. 6. Stir to combine all ingredients. 7. Cook on low for 7-9 hours or until the split peas are completely tender. Cooking times may vary, but aim for tender peas. 8. If the soup is too thick for your liking, you can add more broth or water to reach your desired consistency. 9. Remove the ham bones or ham hocks if used and bay leaf before serving. 10. Serve hot and enjoy your hearty and budget-friendly slow-cooked split pea soup!
