However, the extra effort is worth it as homemade dishes can teach us new things. We can create culinary delights, and bring loved ones together. In a recent youtube video, I explored 3 recipes from grandmother’s across the country and world.
Where to Find Vintage Recipes
Grandmothers all over the world have been sharing their food recipes online. Many of these recipes are traditional, authentic, and have been passed down for generations. These vintage recipes require more preparation time and effort, but the end result is the ultimate comfort food. Whether it’s potato salad, lemon chicken, or any other dish, cooking a recipe from scratch, and learning kitchen tips, can be a rewarding experience that brings people together.
Grandma’s Old Fashioned Potato Salad
One such classic grandma recipe is old fashioned potato salad. This is a dish that has been a favorite in many households for generations. This recipe requires boiling potatoes until they’re tender, making tangy custard with butter, vinegar, egg, sugar, and cornstarch, and then mixing it with onions, scallions, the boiled potatoes, and hard-boiled eggs. The combination of tangy and creamy flavors makes this dish a perfect side dish for any meal. Though it may consume some time, the end result is delicious and reminds us of our grandmother’s cooking. So learn from the past and create wonderful meals that will bring happy memories for years.
Grandma’s Lemon Chicken and Rice
Another popular recipe that has been passed down through generations is Grandma’s Lemon Chicken. This recipe makes 16 servings! It is perfect for a crowd and can be easily adjusted to serve more or fewer people or you can always save some for later.
To make this dish, you will need to marinate the chicken in a mixture of soy sauce, lemon juice, olive oil, ginger, and pepper. Let it marinate for at least four hours to infuse the chicken with flavor. When it’s time to bake, place a cup of rice and a tablespoon of lemon zest at the bottom of a greased baking sheet. Then add your chicken thighs. Pour half of the marinade over the chicken. Add slices of lemon, and bake at 325 degrees Fahrenheit for 40 minutes. Remove the cover and bake for another 15-20 minutes until the chicken is fully cooked.
This recipe comes from Mary Alice Wood from Langley, British Columbia. It is featured on Taste of Home’s website. It serves a large group, so you can adjust the measurements to your liking. Fry four slices of bacon and steam the green beans for three to five minutes. Cook some minced onion in the bacon grease, and then add the vinaigrette ingredients, including brown sugar, white vinegar, mustard powder, salt, and pepper. Cook for a few minutes until bubbly. Add the green beans and serve with the chicken.
