In my opinion canned chicken is best served in a tortilla or a soup! These chicken flautas are the perfect way to use canned chicken that tastes absolutely delicious!
This is a great way to use that can of chicken you’ve been afraid to crack, in the pantry!
Or maybe you’re a canned chicken lover and you’re just looking for new recipes, you will love these!
When to this Serve These Chicken Flautas
These chicken flautas are great for a snack, appetizer, lunch, or dinner! Heck, add in some eggs and call it breakfast!
These would be really excellent to serve at a party or for a regular weeknight dinner. They would go exceptionally well with this Santa Fe Rice and beans recipe (You can download this recipe along with 9 other Crazy Cheap Dinners Here!)
Or you could roll them up and use them instead of taquitos in this taquito casserole!
How to Make Ingredient Swaps
I always say, use what you have on hand! I hate the idea of going out to buy expensive ingredients to make an exact recipe. It’s really not necessary and the ingredients can really add up. I recommend some basic swaps that can really cut down costs and make this your own.
Canned or Fresh Chicken:
If you love canned chicken already and you have a can, this these chicken flautas are for you! If you are afraid of canned chicken, I recommend giving the chicken a rinse once you drain it. This will get rid of some of the “canned” flavor.
If you have fresh leftover or cooked chicken, by all means add it to these flautas instead of canned! It’ll be great. And if you really can’t do the canned chicken and you have to buy some chicken for these flautas, that’s totally fine too! (But I swear, you’d never know!)
Cheese swaps:
I rarely have the actual cheese required to make a recipe. I like to buy what’s on sale to save money and hate buying a specific cheese just for one recipe. When I originally made these, I had to take some sliced cheese and shred it just to make shredded cheese and it turned out great. This is just another example of using what you have on hand.
Had I not had the sliced cheese, I may have added a little more cream cheese instead of the shredded cheese. That’s just something to consider, if you are running short.
Make These Low Carb!
Tortillas are one of my favorite budget friendly things to keep on hand. I even love the ones from the dollar tree! And if you are looking for low carb options, there are a few different brands of low carb tortillas that do the trick. Because the filling for these flautas is carb free, adding a low carb wrap like the ones from Mission or the Aldi brand, can make this entire meal low carb!
